Seedbombs Tanzania

Seed Bombs Tanzania mitigates climate change and environmental degradation through education and reforestation programs.

Located at the gate of Mt. Hanang forest reserve near the fast growing town of Katesh, the Ecological Education Center & Tree Nursery will serve all of East Africa as a hub of practical wisdom. Domestic and international trainees, students, and visitors will leave us with fond memories and the knowledge and tools necessary to successfully implement reforestation projects and engage in environmental advocacy.

Educating

1,200 Teachers and 20,000 Students in Two Years

All primary and secondary schools in Tanzania have environmental clubs to encourage nature conservation at the behest of the first President of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. SeedBomb programs are carried out by the passionate teachers and students who are already involved with their school environmental clubs and serve to add an action-oriented element to their curriculum.

Educators and their students are encouraged to attend our Seed Bomb training programs which include academic presentations on ecological principles alongside the hands-on activities of creating Seed Bombs and propagating saplings. Members of the communities where our SeedBombs will be planted are also welcome to attend sessions and consult with our permaculture experts to determine ideal strategies for cultivation and land management.

Planting

Two Million Trees in Two Years

In keeping with inspiration from Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, our method for planting tens-of-thousands of SeedBombs is unequivocally people-centric. We believe it is essential that tree planting campaigns are designed around the needs of community members to cultivate crops and graze livestock. When the time comes for planting, we work closely with local government leaders who bring farmers and shepherds to the table for planning.

Other mass reforestation models tout the use of flashy technologies such as drones to deliver seeds across large areas, but these methods tend to dismiss what human beneficiaries actually care about. Sequestering the maximum amount of carbon is only one piece of the puzzle. The specific locations of newly planted trees can be of critical importance for the realistically useful and balanced regeneration of land.

Sequestering

40 Thousand Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide

Newly planted trees capture more carbon from the atmosphere than mature trees, so encouraging reforestation using the efficient SeedBombs method is our primary focus. We support the creation of new tree nurseries on the grounds of schools that participate in our SeedBomb training programs to create as much impact as possible.

Additionally, we have devised a scheme to protect existing forests in the area while enabling local communities to benefit from carbon credit income. Simply put, we are working to fill the gaps between villages with newly planted trees so it becomes possible to claim a large interconnected forest area as a single carbon sink that is eligible for credit. This significant task will come to fruition in the coming years as we continue to collaborate with local government leaders, train children in schools, and get our hands dirty planting trees!

100% of the revenue from Carbon Offset Credits will go directly to the community members, schools, and institutions who oversee the tree nurseries that planted saplings originate from.
